Manchester United are still interested in securing the services of PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo.

According to Forbes, Manchester United remain in the fray to land PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo in the coming months.

The Dutchman was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer, with the Red Devils also agreeing to personal terms with him. However, no official bid was made to PSV and Gakpo stayed put in the Eredivisie.

A major reason for Man United’s non-committal was the exorbitant amount they had to pay for Antony. Erik ten Hag and co were keen to land Ajax Amsterdam star Antony and Gakpo for a combined £85million. However, the Brazilian cost United the entire budget, meaning plans to land Gakpo had to be shelved.

The Red Devils have not thrown in the towel and have instead just put off making a move for the upcoming transfer windows. Premier League sides Leeds United and Southampton made late punts to land the 23-year-old in the summer, but the player stayed put.

Gakpo appears to be aware that Man United will return for him and looks set to see out the next few months at the Philips Stadion. He has been in scintillating form this season, scoring 10 goals and assisting nine more in 13 games. To call his output prolific would be an understatement.

Cristiano Ronaldo stayed put at Old Trafford last summer but has fallen down the pecking order under Ten Hag. His future remains unclear, and there is every possibility that he could leave either in the winter of 2023 or at the end of the current campaign. Should that happen, Man United will be left with an attacker short.

Gakpo is not just a dynamic player who is prolific but is also young enough to provide the Red Devils with a long-term option upfront. Eindhoven does not appear averse to selling the Dutch international as long as Man United make an acceptable bid. The onus is now on the Old Trafford outfit to do their part.

Bringing in Gakpo in January could prove to be the difference maker for the Red Devils. The mid-season boost could give Ten Hag the push needed to negotiate the business end of the season and even potentially land a cup or two.
