Jorginho on Barcelona radar

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly weighing up a 2023 Bosman move for Chelsea midfield maestro Jorginho.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Jorginho is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible Bosman move in the 2023 summer transfer window. The Italian midfield maestro is in the final year of his contract with Chelsea but wants to commit his future to the west London club.

Jorginho joined Chelsea from Napoli in July 2018 and has since become a pivotal figure for the Blues. The 30-year-old’s first season at Stamford Bridge was forgettable as he struggled to find a stable footing. But Jorginho has come leaps and bounds since the debut campaign, establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

The Italian midfield maestro, who became the Chelsea vice-captain in his second season with the west London club, has turned out nearly 200 times for the Blues. But Jorginho faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge as he has entered the final year of his contract, with talks over a new deal being slow. Such a situation has captured the attention of Barcelona.

The interest from Barcelona stems from the advancing years of Sergio Busquets. The veteran Spanish midfielder is in the final year of his contract, prompting the Blaugrana to lay down a succession plan for him. Several midfielders, including Ruben Neves and Martin Zubimendi, have thus popped up on Barcelona’s radar.

Meanwhile, reports have claimed that 2022/23 might be Busquets’s final season at the Spotify Camp Nou, with an adventure in the Major League Soccer beckoning the Barcelona captain. And Jorginho has now emerged as the latest candidate on Barcelona’s radar, with the Chelsea captain at the peak of his powers.

While the Italian midfield maestro might not be a like-for-like replacement for Busquets, he has the qualities to succeed in Xavi Hernandez’s system. But Jorginho seems committed to Chelsea, with the report suggesting that he wants to sign a new contract with the west London club.

The 30-year-old has already gone on record to say that he does not want to leave Chelsea, with his agent also claiming that renewing terms with the Blues is a priority for the player. So a move to Barcelona might not see the light of day, with Jorginho seemingly committed to Chelsea.
