La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly pondering over a shock Bosman move for Real Madrid attacker Marco Asensio.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Marco Asensio is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible move in next summer’s transfer window. The Blaugrana will look to snap up the Spanish attacker on a Bosman deal if he runs down his contract with Real Madrid.

Marco Asensio has reached a crossroads in his career despite enjoying a productive 2021/22 campaign, where only Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior scored more than him among Real Madrid players. To make matters worse, the 26-year-old has entered the final year of his contract with Real Madrid, with renewal talks stalled.

That has invariably impacted Asensio’s stature at Real Madrid, with Carlo Ancelotti handing him only 47 minutes of game-time across four appearances thus far. The Spanish attacker has still managed to make his mark, scoring his 50th goal for Real Madrid last week against RB Leipzig. But the player’s future remains uncertain, with Barcelona keeping tabs on his situation.

The interest from Barcelona is surprising for a couple of reasons. The Catalan giants rarely sign a player with history at Real Madrid, even if in a Bosman move. And never does such a player arrive at Camp Nou directly from the Santiago Bernabeu, thus adding to the intrigue about Barcelona’s interest.

In addition, Xavi Hernandez has a stacked attacking unit and might not need Barcelona to invest in a wide attacker unless multiple wingers depart from Camp Nou next summer. That seems unlikely, even though Memphis Depay is currently a bit-part player and in the final year of his contract with Barcelona.

Nonetheless, as per Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona might look to snap up Asensio in a Bosman move next summer if he runs down his contract with Real Madrid. But Barcelona might face stiff competition from other clubs, like AC Milan, in the race to sign the 26-year-old attacker.

Reports this year have suggested that Asensio is ready to leave Real Madrid as a free agent, but a Bosman move to Barcelona might be surprising. It will be interesting to see if the Spaniard does the unthinkable and joins Barcelona in a Bosman move next summer.
