Premier League giants Liverpool have been linked with a move for 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes.

Joao Gomes has made a name for himself in Brazil with Flamengo, and it is not surprising that he is being linked with European giants. According to talkSPORT, Liverpool have sent scouts to run the rule over the talented 21-year-old midfielder.

The highly-talented central midfielder could prove to be a quality long-term acquisition for the Premier League club. It will be interesting to see whether Liverpool decide to come forward with a concrete offer for Gomes when the transfer window reopens in January.

It is no secret that Jurgen Klopp wants to bring in midfield reinforcements, and signing Gomes – either in the January transfer window or next summer – could prove to be a wise decision for Liverpool.

Liverpool have had multiple injury problems in the midfield this season. The likes of Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are sidelined with injuries. Meanwhile, Thiago Alcantara returned to action only a few days ago.

The Reds have had to rely on the likes of James Milner, Fabinho and Harvey Elliott so far, and they will need more depth and quality in the squad in order to rotate their side and keep the players fresh. Liverpool signed Arthur Melo from Juventus on loan before the end of the transfer window, but the Brazilian is working on his match fitness and has not been able to help his new club on the pitch so far.

Gomes is a hard-working midfielder who could prove to be an ideal fit for Jurgen Klopp’s high-pressing style of football. The 21-year-old is impressive when it comes to pressing without the ball, and his ability to drive the team forward will also come in handy.

The technically-gifted midfielder could complement the likes of Thiago and Fabinho well at Liverpool with his skill set. It seems that Gomes is also keen on a move to the Premier League club. Reacting to the links with the Merseyside club, he said that it would be a dream come true for him to join the Reds and play in the Champions League.

Gomes said (h/t talkSPORT), “Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football.”

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool look to press ahead with their interest in Gomes in the coming weeks and months. For now, the 21-year-old has emerged as a viable target for Liverpool heading into the January transfer window.
