London giants Chelsea reportedly have second thoughts about pursuing Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a Manchester United target.
According to a report by The Athletic, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang might be in limbo soon amid speculations surrounding his future, with Chelsea having second thoughts about pursuing the Barcelona striker. The former Arsenal captain is also a target for Manchester United.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finds himself in a frustrating situation despite ending the 2021/22 season as Barcelona’s top scorer. The 33-year-old had played only half of the campaign with the Blaugrana, yet led the scoring charts by the time the final game ended. But with Robert Lewandowski on board at Camp Nou, he has fallen down the pecking order at FC Barcelona.
The Gabonese striker has barely featured for Barcelona thus far in the 2022/23 season and might have to consider leaving Barcelona to secure regular game-time. And a return to the Premier League could be on the cards for Aubameyang, only a few months after he left Arsenal in disgrace, with Chelsea keen on signing him.
Chelsea loaned Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner before the 2022/23 season began, and that has left Thomas Tuchel without recognised strikers in his squad, apart from Armando Broja. But the Albanian international is yet to convince the Chelsea boss that he is ready to spearhead the Blues’ attack week in week out.
Kai Havertz has thus been the preferred option to reprise the central striker’s role for Chelsea thus far this season. But with the German international blowing hot and cold, the west Londoners need to bring in a natural centre-forward, bringing Aubameyang into the picture. But with Manchester United also keen on signing the Barcelona striker, the race is heating up.
Manchester United recently submitted an enquiry to sign Aubameyang amid uncertainties surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s future. And with the Red Devils yet to replace Edinson Cavani, the Barcelona outcast is a viable target. But Aubameyang reportedly prefers to join Chelsea instead of Manchester United.
However, Aubameyang’s prospects might not be bright, with Chelsea having second thoughts about pursuing the former Arsenal captain. That might come as a boost for Manchester United, but time is running out for either club to secure the services of the Barcelona striker.
