London giants Arsenal are reportedly the front-runners ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Marco Asensio from Real Madrid.

According to Daily Mirror, Marco Asensio is closer to joining Arsenal instead of Manchester United before the summer transfer window shuts down. The Spanish attacker will likely leave Real Madrid this week, with Los Blancos open to cashing in on him.

Marco Asensio is in a frustrating situation at Real Madrid as he was productive in the 2021/22 season yet lost his spot to Rodrygo Goes by the end of the campaign. And with Federico Valverde remodelling himself as a versatile asset who can play on the right flank, the 26-year-old has fallen down the pecking order further.

The Spanish international has managed only seven minutes of game-time thus far this term and stares at an uncertain future at the Santiago Bernabeu. Furthermore, Asensio has entered the final year of his Real Madrid contract, with widespread reports claiming he might leave the club this summer. And his situation has captured the attention of Arsenal and Manchester United.

Recent reports claimed that intermediaries offered Manchester United the chance to sign Asensio from Real Madrid. But the Red Devils are not expected to launch the offensive to secure the services of the Spaniard, with recent reports claiming that Antony is on the verge of moving to Old Trafford in a deal worth €100 million.

So even though Manchester United and Asensio have been in contact over a possible late move, a deal looks unlikely. That might be the reason why Arsenal will have taken the lead in the race to sign Asensio from Real Madrid this summer.

The Gunners have loaned Nicolas Pepe to OGC Nice, and the Ivory Coast international will unlikely feature again for the north London club. Arsenal will thus look to replace Pepe with a top-class attacker, bringing Asensio into the picture. And Asensio’s representatives are in touch with Arsenal over an eleventh-hour move.

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Asensio is trying to engineer a late exit from the Bernabeu, and a move to Arsenal seems like his best bet. It will be interesting to see if the Gunners beat Manchester United to the signature of the Real Madrid attacker in the coming days.
