Atletico Madrid are making their move for out-of-favour Tottenham Hotspur star Sergio Reguilon

According to AS, Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have enquired about signing Tottenham Hotspur star Sergio Reguilon in the ongoing summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old joined Spurs from Real Madrid following a fruitful campaign on loan at Sevilla in Sevilla in 2020. While he did enjoy several opportunities, he hasn’t enjoyed much success. The arrival of Antonio Conte combined with an unfortunate injury setback has seen him stay on the sidelines.

Reguilon has not featured much under the Italian and is yet to enjoy a single minute of action this season. With Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon ahead of him in the pecking order, the Spaniard is at best the third choice left-back at N-17. Ben Davies is also capable of doing a job, adding more options to Conte’s plans.

The Spaniards look set to lose Renan Lodi to Nottingham Forest and it is imperative that Atletico bring in a replacement. Reguilon appears to be that man and a move to the Wanda Metropolitano appears imminent. The terms of the transfer do not appear to have an option to make the deal permanent and the player will return to Tottenham next summer.

The move gives the 25-year-old an excellent opportunity to make a case to be included in the Spanish squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Playing regularly for one of the top teams in Spain and with Champions League football to boot, Reguilon will have the platform to exhibit his talents.

Diego Simeone has shown the tenacity to get the best out of his players and that is good news for a player in need of a reboot. Unless something drastic happens, the 25-year-old might have played his last game in Tottenham colours.

He is already familiar with the Spanish top flight and needs no need to adjust to the pace. Reguilon, once he completes his move will join the likes of Thibaut Courtois, Diego Llorente and Alvaro Morata to have played for both Madrid heavyweights.

Conte has admitted in the recent past that Tottenham are still in the market for reinforcements. Whether Reguilon’s exit will lead to another new player arriving at Hotspur Way remains to be seen.
