Newcastle United have reportedly lodged a £25 million offer to sign 25-year-old French forward Martin Terrier from Stade Rennais.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United have entered the race for in-demand Rennes forward by lodging a £25 million bid for the versatile 25-year-old attacker.

Having moved to sign Matt Targett, Nick Pope, and Sven Botman earlier in the summer, Newcastle United have since shifted their focus to adding more firepower to their forward line, but to no fruition. In the last week of the summer transfer window, Newcastle have upped their efforts to bring in a couple of attacking additions, especially given Callum Wilson’s injury scare.

The Magpies have been linked with a number of attackers in recent week, and it seems they have lodged an offer for versatile Rennes forward Martin Terrier alongside several others.

Terrier, who joined Rennes from Lyon for around £11 million in the summer of 2020, can play either on the left wing or as a central striker. The French forward was one of the standout players in Ligue 1 last season, with only PSG’s Kylian Mbappe and AS Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder racking up more than his league tally of 21 goals.

Terrier also provided four assists in his 37 Ligue 1 appearances as he enjoyed the most productive season of his career to date, helping his team into the top-four league spots. His rapid rise is not going unnoticed on the continent, and Terrier has been linked with a transfer away from Rennes.

Tottenham, Liverpool, West Ham United, and Leeds are among the clubs mentioned as potential contenders for Terrier’s signature, with Leeds walking away owing to Rennes’ steep asking price of over £30 million. But as per Football Insider, Newcastle United have now jumped the bandwagon and made their move with a £25 million offer for the versatile French attacker.

Adept at playing as a left winger or centre-forward, Terrier would be a useful option for Eddie Howe given his prolific nature in front of goal. But it has been reported that Rennes are adamant on keeping hold of the 25-year-old in the current transfer window and are even locked in contract negotiations with the attacker over a new deal on improved wages, with the current contract due to expire in 2026.

Also, Terrier has himself declared his desire to remain at Rennes despite interest from Newcastle and others, with UEFA Europa League football on offer, and he is well within contention to make Didier Deschamps France World Cup squad. Addressing his future following Rennes’ 2-1 Ligue 1 victory over Ajaccio last Sunday, Terrier said, “I will be at Rennes this season. That is for sure and it is certain.”

As things stand, Newcastle are studying a host of options in the market and are working on a deal to sign Watford’s Joao Pedro before the window closes next week. However, they are set to face fresh competition from Everton for the Brazilian attacker’s services this summer.
