David Moyes has confirmed that West Ham United tabled a bid to sign Matheus Nunes, with the offer reportedly being worth €35 million.

According to a report by Portuguese publication Record, West Ham United lodged an offer worth €35 million to secure the services of Matheus Nunes. The Hammers proposed a base fee of around €30 million, with the remaining €5 million being add-ons. But David Moyes has confirmed that Sporting CP did not accept the bid.

Matheus Nunes is one of the best young midfielders in Europe, with the 23-year-old going from strength to strength since joining Sporting CP from Estoril in January 2019. The 23-year-old has become a mainstay in the middle of the park for the Portuguese giants while breaking into his national team.

The Portuguese midfielder has turned out 100 times for Sporting, chipping in with seven goals and nine assists. And Nunes’s progress in the last three and a half years has captured the attention of several clubs across Europe, with West Ham United among his prospective suitors.

The interest from West Ham is intriguing, considering they have already bolstered their midfield unit by signing Flynn Downes. But Downes is in the nascent years of his career and will unlikely feature prominently for West Ham in the 2022/23 season. The Hammers thus need to invest in a new midfielder.

Several midfielders have popped up on West Ham’s radar in the last few weeks, including Teun Koopmeiners, Conor Gallagher, and Ibrahim Sangare. Nunes is also a viable target for West Ham, as the Portuguese international possesses qualities to boost the creative ranks at the London Stadium.

According to Record, the London outfit submitted an offer worth €35 million, including a base fee of around €30 million. But Sporting CP did not accept the proposal, with David Moyes confirming the rejection of the bid, with the Portuguese midfielder unlikely to leave the Lisbon-based club.

The 23-year-old is also a target for Liverpool, but a summer move seems unlikely for him. It will be interesting to see who West Ham will turn toward after failing to sign Nunes, who will unlikely leave Sporting CP in the ongoing transfer window.
