Manchester City have reportedly verbally agreed to sign Anderlecht for left-back Sergio Gomez, with the fee expected to be around €15 million.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City and Anderlecht have reached a verbal agreement for the transfer of Sergio Gomez. The fee involved is expected to be close to €15 million, while Manchester City are yet to make a firm decision on the left-back’s immediate future.

Manchester City have been looking for a left-back for the best part of this window and could finally get a player to the Etihad. Pep Guardiola has had problems in the area but has been unable to get his preferred star in the position.

Marc Cucurella was his top target, but Manchester City could not find a way to get a deal done with Brighton & Hove Albion. Instead, the Spanish full-back moved to Chelsea. Moreover, Oleksandr Zinchenko’s move to Arsenal has weakened Guardiola’s left-back options, forcing him to play Joao Cancelo there, like he did for much of the 2021/22 season.

Sergio Gomez has recently emerged as an alternative, with Manchester City and Anderlecht holding lengthy negotiations to agree on a deal. Anderlecht recently rejected an offer from Manchester City, but the two clubs seem to have found a breakthrough.

Manchester City have now reached a verbal agreement with Anderlecht to sign Gomez. The transfer fee discussed is close to the €15 million mark the Belgian club demanded in the first place.

The Spanish full-back has been keen on joining Manchester City as soon as the club showed interest in him. However, his immediate future at the Etihad is still not clear. Initial reports indicated the Citizens might look to loan him to La Liga outfit Girona, but those plans may have to wait.

From how things look, Manchester City will first evaluate the player upon arrival and then decide on his immediate future. If they decide to send him away temporarily, they may have to dig into the market again for another left-back with a strong background.

For now, Gomez seems like a promising talent and could fit into Guardiola’s side. However, the Spanish full-back could be seen as a future prospect, and the Premier League champions may put his development at the forefront before integrating him into the first team.
