West Ham United have reportedly established contact with Paris Saint-Germain for German defender Thilo Kehrer, valued at around £17 million.

According to Daily Mail, West Ham United have reached out to French giants Paris Saint-Germain for German defender Thilo Kehrer over a move in the ongoing transfer window. PSG value Kehrer at around £17 million.

West Ham United are enjoying a good summer that has seen them bring in a few key additions. Nayef Aguerd is the east London club’s lone defensive recruit, and Thilo Kehrer could soon follow the Moroccan should a deal be agreed upon.

West Ham have reached an agreement with Fulham for Issa Diop. The 25-year-old’s departure leaves a void in the Hammers’ defence, and it makes sense that they are seeking replacements. Once Diop leaves, West Ham will only be left with the injured duo of Aguerd and Craig Dawson not to mention an ageing Angelo Ogbonna. This makes Kurt Zouma the lone available senior central defender on David Moyes’s books.

The player on West Ham’s radar is Kehrer, a German international who has been at PSG since 2018. The French giants are ready to part ways with the 25-year-old for £17 million, around the same amount the Hammers will receive for Diop. It could be a case of them swapping one 25-year-old defender for another.

Kehrer has the potential to become a world-class player, and a move to the Premier League could aid his development. A good passer, he is capable of bringing the ball out from the back and fits in well as a modern-day centre-back.

The German international is arguably a better player than Diop and has a more refined skill set. This gives West Ham an upgrade in a key position that was screaming out for quality. Kehrer is also capable of playing as a full-back, giving Moyes different options should they desire it.

The chances of Kehrer being deployed out wide are rare, given that his crossing ability is not up to the mark. This makes him an unreliable option, especially when it comes to the attack or switching play to the other flank. With the summer window set to close on September 1, the onus is on West Ham to meet PSG’s £17 million asking price. A sale would be the best foot forward for all parties involved.
