Manchester City are edging closer to signing Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht for a fee of over €10 million, with discussions in their final stages.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City could complete the capture of Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht for a fee of over €10 million. The final details of the deal are being discussed by both clubs, with a transfer now imminent.

Manchester City could wrap up a new signing in the coming days, as Sergio Gomez could arrive as the club’s new left-back. After weeks of negotiations, the Premier League champions seem to have found a breakthrough in talks.

Pep Guardiola wanted a new left-back in this window, and he hoped to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton. However, the Spaniard has moved to Chelsea in a £62 million deal, as Manchester City refused to go beyond £40 million for the defender.

Manchester City had already sold Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal, which increased the need to strengthen the left-back position for the new season. Hence the links to Sergio Gomez emerged, who was once a target for the Gunners before they signed the Ukrainian.

Anderlecht demanded €15 million for Gomez, which sounded reasonable from Manchester City’s point of view. And after lengthy negotiations, Guardiola’s side are ready to bring the defender to the Etihad Stadium in a deal costing them in excess of €10 million.

Talks between Anderlecht and Manchester City are in the final stages as the last details of the deals are currently being discussed. The player is keen on a move to the Etihad and could soon realise his dream.

Initially, when Manchester City thought about acquiring the left-back, they planned on loaning him out to Girona. The Spanish side are part of the City Group, as Guardiola wanted him to have regular playing experience in the top flight of one of the top-five leagues.

However, Manchester City now plan to keep the left-back in their first-team squad for the new season. The Premier League champions are short in depth in the area, with Joao Cancelo expected to play as their first-choice left-back this term.

Gomez’s arrival could allow Guardiola to rotate at left-back for cup games or a few unimportant Champions League group games. He could also provide cover if Cancelo suffers an injury or is suspended. Either way, the Spaniard’s capture looks like a good signing for Guardiola, who could develop him into a future star.
