Barcelona midfield prodigy Gavi will reportedly not sign a new contract with the club if they bring in Manchester City superstar Bernardo Silva.
According to Beteve, Barcelona wonderkid Gavi could walk away from contract negotiations with the club if they manage to secure the signing of Bernardo Silva from Manchester City this summer.
Gavi burst into the Barcelona first-team setup last year, making his debut under former manager Ronald Koeman. From then on, the teenager has not looked back, going on to establish himself as a regular in the side under Xavi Hernandez while also becoming a part of the Spanish national team.
The youngster enjoyed a stunning breakthrough campaign, bagging two goals and six assists from 34 La Liga appearances. However, Gavi is in the final year of his contract with Barcelona and is yet to sign a new deal. Talks over an extension have been ongoing for a while now but an agreement is yet to be finalised.
Gavi rejected an inferior offer from the Blaugrana earlier, following which productive discussions have taken place and an agreement is said to be close. It was claimed that Barcelona would complete the process of his contract signing once the midfielder would turn 18, as it would allow them to tie him down to a long-term five-year contract.
Gavi celebrated his 18th birthday this past Friday but it seems like there is some hold-up in the contract signing as Beteve reports that the midfielder might not pen a new deal if Manchester City star Bernardo Silva arrives at Barcelona this summer.
Barcelona have been pushing hard to sign the 27-year-old Portuguese international this summer and are believed to have an agreement with him over personal terms. Recently, they have made contact with Manchester City to try and engineer a deal. However, their attempt to land Silva could lead to trouble in their efforts to extend Gavi’s contract.
The report states that Gavi’s camp had informed Barcelona as early as June that they would not put pen to paper on a new deal if the club brought in Silva. It could be because the 27-year-old’s signing could eat into the midfielder’s game-time, especially if Barcelona fail to offload Frenkie de Jong. So, it will be interesting to see whether there is any issue with Gavi’s contract extension and things go smoothly for Barcelona.
