Aston Villa consider re-signing Ross Barkley

Aston Villa are reportedly considering the prospect of re-signing Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley, who is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

According to the Daily Mail, Aston Villa could consider the possibility of making a move for Ross Barkley, who is on his way out of Chelsea this summer.

Barkley joined Chelsea from boyhood club Everton in January 2018 but has endured a torrid time at Stamford Bridge. The 28-year-old was once regarded as one of the brightest talents in the country, but injuries and inconsistencies have meant that he has never been able to hit the heights expected of him.

Barkley has made 99 appearances for Chelsea so far, producing a tally of 12 goals and 11 assists. He had a loan spell at Aston Villa during the 2020/21 campaign, but after a bright start, the England international struggled to make the most of it, finishing with three goals and an assist in 24 matches.

Barkley played just 14 times in all competitions last season, indicating that he is not a major part of manager Thomas Tuchel’s plans and Chelsea are ready to cut their ties with the Englishman this summer. A return to Everton is said to be on the cards, with talks undergoing about a possible transfer.

However, Aston Villa could also emerge as a potential destination for Barkley, as they are considering the possibility of re-signing him this summer. The Villans have already added an attacking midfielder to their roster by making the transfer of Philippe Coutinho permanent from Barcelona.

Beyond Coutinho, Steven Gerrard’s side also have Emiliano Buendia and Jacob Ramsey, who can essay the role that Barkley would do. Contract rebel Carney Chukwuemeka would also be an option, provided he signs a new deal.

So, signing the 28-year-old this summer could be a redundant move for the Midlands outfit. Instead, Aston Villa could use those funds to strengthen other areas of the pitch and add more quality to their attacking unit, especially on the flanks, given Anwar El Ghazi and Bertrand Traore are likely to depart.

As for Barkley, it remains to be seen where the 28-year-old ends up this summer. But as things stand, an exit from Chelsea seems set in stone for the former Evertonian.
