Billy Gilmour could leave Chelsea on loan after Thomas Tuchel axed the 21-year-old from his pre-season plans as Everton remain interested.

According to Football Scotland, Everton could sign Billy Gilmour on loan as Chelsea are ready to allow the player to join former manager Frank Lampard at Goodison Park. The 21-year-old Scotland international is well down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, and another temporary move could be the right decision.

Billy Gilmour was touted as one of the players to watch out for in the future after making his debut under Frank Lampard in the Chelsea senior side. He put in a few impressive appearances in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign. However, since then, a knee injury kept him out for a considerable period, thus hampering his rapid development.

As a result, Gilmour was never a regular again with Chelsea and spent the last season with Norwich City on loan, playing 24 times for the Canaries in the top flight. With two years left on his contract, Gilmour’s Chelsea future is up in the air, as another loan move could be on the horizon for the Scotland international.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has axed Gilmour and teammate Armando Broja from their pre-season squad, with the latter likely to sign with West Ham United permanently.

Gilmour is not expected to sign with another club permanently, but a new loan move could be on the cards. And Everton are keen on securing his signature.

Lampard is intent on reinforcing his midfield options in this window and could consider his former charge as a cost-effective, short-term solution. If Gilmour impresses on loan, Everton could even consider a cut-price move next summer when the midfielder will have one year left on his Chelsea deal.

Lampard could be thinking about getting the best out of the 21-year-old midfielder after Gilmour put in some impressive displays under the manager at Chelsea. However, other teams are also keen on the Scotland international.

With Tuchel relieving the midfielder from his squad, Gilmour was first expected to join up with the Chelsea Under-23s, although with interest from Everton mounting, he could be on his way to sign documents.

If things move quickly, Gilmour could join Lampard and the Everton squad in the United States to continue on their pre-season tour. A move to Goodison Park could be good for the midfielder, who might end up getting fairly regular outings, compared to Chelsea, where he could be the sixth or seventh-choice midfielder.
