Liverpool are reportedly in talks with AFC Ajax winger Antony, who is also a transfer target for arch-rivals Manchester United.

According to Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola, as relayed by Sport Witness, Liverpool are very much in the race to sign AFC Ajax winger and Manchester United transfer target Antony this summer.

Antony has been a big success at Ajax since he arrived from Brazil two years ago. The winger was particularly impressive in the 2021/22 campaign, finishing with 12 goals and ten assists from 32 appearances in all competitions.

The 22-year-old Brazilian has emerged as one of Manchester United’s top attacking targets in the ongoing transfer window. New manager Erik ten Hag is intent on reuniting with his former protege from Ajax after successfully raiding them for the capture of Lisandro Martinez, who is on the verge of moving to Old Trafford.

Manchester United have been in negotiations with Ajax over a possible transfer for the 22-year-old winger. However, things have slowed down due to the Dutch giants’ transfer fee demands, with the Eredivisie champions reportedly holding out for £70 million (€82 million).

Manchester United will now have to deal with the added complication of Liverpool’s interest in Antony. As per Jorge Nicola, the Reds are in talks with Ajax as well as the representatives of Antony over a possible move this summer.

It is certainly intriguing, considering that Liverpool have already strengthened their frontline with the signing of Darwin Nunez while Fabio Carvalho has joined the side. They have also extended Mohamed Salah’s contract. But having lost Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi, Jurgen Klopp’s side could use added depth in the attacking unit.

Antony’s pace and panache would go well with Liverpool’s style of play. However, the winger would have to compete with Salah for a starting berth, whereas he could pretty much be a regular fixture in the lineup if he were to join Manchester United this summer.

The update from Jorge Nicola also clarifies that Antony could be sold for a lower value than the €80 million+ reported in the past. The journalist claims that Ajax could settle for a fee of €65-70 million. Whether Liverpool decide to step up their pursuit of the 22-year-old or Manchester United prevail in the race will be interesting to see.
