Premier League heavyweights Manchester United have reportedly issued an ultimatum to Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong to take a call on his future.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Frenkie de Jong only has a few more days to take a definitive decision on his long-term future. The Barcelona midfielder has received an ultimatum from Manchester United to decide where he wants to ply his trade beyond the summer transfer window.

Frenkie de Jong has been a part of in one of several captivating stories surrounding Barcelona in the summer transfer window. The Catalan giants have been scrambling to activate two economic levers to ease their financial woes greatly and pursue their priority targets this year.

The effects of the levers have already been visible, with Barcelona announcing the agreement to sign Raphinha from Leeds United. But even though their problems will start easing up in the foreseeable future, de Jong remains on the transfer list at FC Barcelona, with his wages proving problematic for the Blaugrana.

At the same time, de Jong is due to receive deferred payments from Barcelona, which is holding up a potential departure from Camp Nou. And the Dutch midfielder will also receive hiked wages if he remains at FC Barcelona beyond the summer transfer window, meaning he is determined to stay at his current club amid interest from Manchester United.

But the Premier League heavyweights are not one to throw in the towel, and two of their executives were recently in Barcelona to discuss a potential summer move for de Jong. Manchester United and Barcelona have reportedly reached an agreement over the transfer fee, but convincing the 25-year-old remains an issue.

The Red Devils are reportedly set to ramp up talks to convince de Jong to move to Old Trafford. And while the prospect of reuniting with Erik ten Hag is appealing, he is not ready to forego the deferred payment from Barcelona. But Manchester United’s patience is wearing thin, and they have issued an ultimatum to de Jong.

The English giants want the former Ajax midfielder to take his final decision on his future in the next few days to clear out the situation. The stance from Manchester United makes sense, considering they are yet to bolster their midfield following the departures of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and others.
