Manchester United will have to look elsewhere to bolster their midfield unit, with Konrad Laimer reportedly preferring a move to Bayern Munich.

According to a report by 90 min, Manchester United’s hopes of signing Konrad Laimer in the summer transfer window will likely end in the coming days. The RB Leipzig midfielder will prefer to join Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Konrad Laimer has been with the Red Bull setup for the better part of the past decade. The 25-year-old graduated from the Red Bull Salzburg academy eight years ago before making his first-team debut in September 2014. The player moved to RB Leipzig in July 2017 and has since come leaps and bounds at the German club.

The Austrian international has turned out 159 times for Leipzig in the last five years, chipping in with 11 goals and 18 assists. But Laimer’s stint with Leipzig and the Red Bull setup will likely end this summer. The player has rejected a contract renewal offer from Leipzig, who might look to cash in on him this year amid interest from Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

Manchester United will need to invest in at least one midfielder in the summer transfer window as Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic have departed from Old Trafford. The two midfielders are moving to Serie A, with Matic joining AS Roma and Pogba reaching an agreement to return to Juventus.

Laimer has thus emerged as a viable target for Manchester United as Erik ten Hag looks to stamp his authority at Old Trafford. But Manchester United will need to fend off stiff competition from Bayern Munich to secure the services of the 25-year-old midfielder.

The interest from Bayern Munich comes in the wake of the impending departure of Corentin Tolisso as a free agent. In addition, former RB Leipzig captain Marcel Sabitzer faces an uncertain future at the Allianz Arena, prompting the Bundesliga champions to scour the market for a central midfielder.

According to 90 min, Laimer has his heart set on reuniting with Julian Nagelsmann at Bayern Munich. Manchester United will thus face disappointment in the race to sign the Austrian international and will need to go back to the drawing board to identify alternatives.
