Paris Saint-Germain will reportedly provide stiff competition to Real Madrid in the race to sign 24-year-old Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer this summer.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Lovro Majer is the subject of interest from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The 24-year-old Stade Rennais midfielder is also a target for Real Madrid.

Lovro Majer spent his formative years at six Croatian clubs before graduating from the Lokomotiva Zagreb academy. The player first burst into the limelight after moving to Dinamo Zagreb in 2018 and has taken his career to new heights since joining Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais last summer.

The 24-year-old took little time to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in Ligue 1 and enjoyed an excellent 2021/22 campaign. Majer amassed 11 goals and 13 assists in 49 appearances for Rennes. And his exploits have not gone unnoticed, with some of the most high profile clubs in Europe, including Real Madrid and PSG, setting their sights on him.

The interest from Real Madrid stems from the advancing years of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. The two ageing midfield stalwarts are in the final phases of their respective careers, and Los Blancos will need to lay down a succession plan for them. But signing Majer this summer could be out of the question, considering Aurelien Tchouameni is on the verge of joining Real Madrid.

While Tchouameni and Majer are vastly different midfielders, the Frenchman’s arrival this summer will leave Carlo Ancelotti with seven senior midfielders. So Real Madrid might not pursue the 24-year-old ahead of the 2022/23 season, giving PSG a window of opportunity to pounce.

Interestingly, PSG wanted to steal a march on Real Madrid in the pursuit of Tchouameni. But Majer might be a better fit at Parc des Princes, considering the midfield lacks creative quality, especially with Marco Verratti’s fitness levels going down in recent years. And the Croatian international is a viable target for PSG.

Majer comes with a Luka Modric seal of approval, but Real Madrid’s midfield situation means PSG will fancy the prospects of securing the services of the 24-year-old Croat. It will be interesting to see if the Ligue 1 champions prise Majer away from Rennes this summer.
