Serie A giants AS Roma are reportedly the front-runners to secure the services of Real Madrid midfielder Isco in a Bosman move this summer.

According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Isco is getting closer to joining AS Roma after leaving Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. The Serie A giants lead the race to sign the Spanish midfielder in a Bosman move ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Isco has called time on a successful yet frustrating stint with Real Madrid, with whom he won every trophy, including five UEFA Champions League titles. But the presence of midfield stalwarts like Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Casemiro hampered his prospects at Real Madrid in the last nine seasons, restricting him to feature as a squad player.

The 30-year-old turned out 353 times for the Merengues while chipping in with 53 goals and 56 assists. Isco is now a free agent and is set to embark on a new challenge, with clubs from Spain, England, and Italy keen on signing him in a Bosman move. And his next destination seems to be AS Roma.

The Giallorossi will need to enter the market for a creative midfielder in the summer transfer window as Henrikh Mkhitaryan could depart from Stadio Olimpico. The former Manchester United playmaker has popped up on the radars of several Premier League clubs but looks set to move across Serie A by joining Inter Milan.

Mkhitaryan’s departure will prompt AS Roma to scour the market for a replacement, especially with Gonzalo Villar not featuring in Jose Mourinho’s plans. And while Isco struggled to nail down a spot at Real Madrid, he still has the right qualities to succeed in Serie A, with the game’s pace in Italy likely to suit him.

The Spanish midfielder also features on the radars of clubs like Newcastle United, Sevilla, Real Betis and Galatasaray. But those clubs will have to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements, with AS Roma reportedly leading the race to sign the Real Madrid midfielder when he becomes a free agent.

It will be interesting to see if Isco’s other suitors step up their efforts to sign him once he leaves Real Madrid. As things stand, the 30-year-old is closing in on moving to Serie A by joining AS Roma in a Bosman move in the summer transfer window.
