Premier League giants have reportedly joined the race to sign 24-year-old Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez this summer.

According to a report by The Athletic, Chelsea have added Lautaro Martinez to the list of players they are looking at to strengthen their attack ahead of the next season. The Blues are bracing themselves for multiple departures this summer and have started identifying potential replacements for outgoing players.

Centre-back is one area that might need heavy reinforcements, with the impending departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen expected. Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso have both been linked with Barcelona, leaving Chelsea with a defence in need of multiple additions this summer.

The futures of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are not clear either, with both midfielders entering the final years of their contract with the Blues this summer. They are attracting interest too with Jorginho getting linked with a return to Serie A, while Manchester United are monitoring Kante’s situation at Chelsea.

In the attack, Chelsea could potentially lose Christian Pulisic with the USMNT international eager for game time ahead of the FIFA World Cup later this year. Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech are also said to be ‘exploring their options’, and summer moves for them cannot be ruled out.

As a result, the west Londoners are actively looking for forwards who can replace the aforementioned players in the squad. In this quest, Lautaro Martinez, who has maintained his goalscoring form even after the departures of Antonio Conte and Romelu Lukaku, has emerged as a potential signing for Chelsea.

Signing the 24-year-old Argentine international would not be easy for the Blues, however. Firstly, Inter’s demands would be exponentially high, with over four years remaining on Martinez’s current contract with the Nerazzurri. He is also one of their most important players, and the Italian giants do not want to sell him even though they need to offload some players to balance their books.

This could force Chelsea to look for cheaper options. RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku has been touted as a transfer target, while there have also been discussions with Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele’s entourage. The former Borussia Dortmund attacker will also be available on a free transfer if Chelsea agree on personal terms with him.
