Robert Lewandowski has reportedly turned down an offer from Bayern Munich amid interest from Barcelona over a possible summer move.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Robert Lewandowski has handed Barcelona a boost in his pursuit. The Polish international has rejected a contract offer from Bayern Munich and could leave the Bundesliga champions in the summer transfer window.

Robert Lewandowski is one of the greatest strikers ever to have graced the game, going from strength to strength with each passing year. The 33-year-old has been arguably the most productive player in Europe in the last few years and has enjoyed another strong campaign.

The Polish international has amassed a tally of 49 goals and seven assists in 45 appearances across all competitions. But Lewandowski’s contract situation has left Bayern Munich in a spot of bother, with his deal running out next year. The development has captured the attention of one of the biggest clubs in Europe – Barcelona.

Barcelona will need to sign a striker in the summer transfer window as Martin Braithwaite will likely depart from Camp Nou to embark on a new adventure, hoping to feature prominently for his next club. In addition, Luuk de Jong has no future at FC Barcelona and will return to Sevilla for good once his loan deal expires.

The duo’s exit will leave Xavi Hernandez with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the only natural centre-forward at his disposal, prompting the Barcelona manager to demand the addition of a new striker. To that end, Erling Haaland had initially emerged as the priority target for Barcelona. But the Norwegian international will join Manchester City in the summer, with Lewandowski emerging as a viable alternative.

Widespread reports have also claimed that the 33-year-old is keen on joining Barcelona in the summer transfer window. And the latest development will provide a boost to the Blaugrana, with Lewandowski turning down a contract offer from Bayern Munich.

So while several Bayern Munich board members have publicly insisted that Lewandowski will not leave ahead of the 2022/23 season, a summer departure looks likely. According to the report, the Polish international will ask for his departure in the summer transfer window, leaving Barcelona in a healthy position in his pursuit.
