Bayern Munich have reportedly entered the race to sign VfB Stuttgart star Borna Sosa, who is a target for Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United.

According to BILD, as relayed by Fichajes, Bayern Munich are the latest club to express an interest in securing the signing of VfB Stuttgart full-back Borna Sosa. The Croatian defender is also being pursued by Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Sosa came through the youth ranks at Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb and made 41 senior appearances before joining Stuttgart in the summer of 2018. Since his arrival, the 24-year-old has been a regular on the left side of the defence for the Swabians and has featured over 80 times for the German club.

Sosa has enjoyed a particularly productive 2021/22 campaign, even though Stuttgart find themselves mired in the battle for survival in the Bundesliga. So far this term, the left-back has made 29 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals and chalking up nine assists. His performances have led to widespread interest from clubs across Europe, with Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea keen.

Barcelona are in the market for a new left-back as they look for a backup option for senior star Jordi Alba. They have been looking at several options for a player who can challenge the Spaniard and potentially replace him in the coming years. A move for Jose Gaya had been mooted heavily, but those rumours have gone quiet of late. Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso is a top target, but Sosa is also an option for Barcelona.

Chelsea’s need for a new left-back stems from the uncertainty surrounding Alonso’s future. With Ben Chilwell injured, the Spaniard has been a regular starter. But with his contract expiring next year, an exit in the summer is a strong possibility, especially with Alonso desiring a move to Barcelona. It would leave Chelsea light on options at left-back, making Sosa a viable target.

At the same time, Manchester United are also keen on signing the Croatian defender, despite having plenty of options in the position. Luke Shaw and Alex Telles have shared game-time this term, although neither has been consistent enough. Furthermore, the Red Devils will have Brandon Williams back from his loan spell at Norwich City, while young Alvaro Fernandez is also an option.

So, unless there are a couple of exits in the summer, it is unlikely that Manchester United will pursue Sosa with intent. But, if they do, they will have to contend with competition from Bayern Munich, apart from Chelsea and Barcelona. Die Roten are already strengthening the right-back slot with Noussair Mazraoui’s impending arrival and want a new left-back to compete with Alphonso Davies.

With as many as four European heavyweights lining up to sign Sosa in the summer, a transfer looks very much likely. It will be interesting to see who among Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Chelsea, and Manchester United come out on top in the race to sign the 24-year-old.
