Premier League giants Manchester United could make a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Corentin Tolisso, who will be available on a free deal this summer.

According to Calciomercato, Manchester United are resigned to the fact that they may have to focus on cheaper deals, preferably Bosman moves, in the upcoming summer transfer window due to their failure to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League. With a central midfield signing one of their priorities, they have identified Bayern Munich’s Corentin Tolisso as a possible capture.

Tolisso joined Bayern Munich in a €40 million move from Lyon in the 2017 summer transfer window. But after a productive first season, where he scored ten times and assisted seven goals across all competitions, Tolisso suffered an ACL injury, which reduced him to just two league appearances the next season.

Injuries continued to haunt the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner as an ankle issue in 2020 forced him to sit out almost half of the 2019/20 season, followed by a torn tendon in 2021, which again limited his game time. The ongoing season has been largely injury-affected as well, as Tolisso has played just over 1000 minutes for the club across competitions.

Thus, it does not come as a surprise that Bayern Munich have decided against renewing Tolisso’s contract. The 27-year-old’s time with the Bavarian giants is set to come to an end this summer as his contract runs down, and Manchester United have now emerged as potential suitors.

The Red Devils are in the market for a central midfield signing. Paul Pogba’s contract with the club expires this summer, and it is highly unlikely that he will sign an extension. Nemanja Matic, too, has confirmed that he will leave Manchester United this summer. Thus, Manchester United are eager to add a top-quality central midfielder to their squad.

While Tolisso’s versatility will provide them with a lot of options, the 27-year-old’s injury record does not paint a good picture, and Manchester United will be wary of that.

Frenkie de Jong is on their radar as well, and the Barcelona midfielder could reportedly be available in the summer. De Jong has previously played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax, which will hold him in good stead if he decides to move to Old Trafford.
