La Liga champions Atletico Madrid are reportedly keen on signing Alvaro Odriozola from Real Madrid in the summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Alvaro Odriozola is the subject of interest from Real Madrid over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The La Liga champions are keen on signing a right-back ahead of the 2022/23 season, with the Real Madrid defender one of the candidates on their radar.

Alvaro Odriozola joined Real Madrid from Real Sociedad in July 2018 amid plenty of excitement and hype around him. But the Spanish defender has either been out on loan at a foreign club or had to suffice with playing second fiddle to Dani Carvajal. The former happened last summer, with Fiorentina snapping him up on a season-long loan deal.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a reasonably solid 2021/22 campaign, chipping in with one goal and one assist in 26 appearances thus far. Odriozola’s performances have prompted Vincenzo Italiano to push Fiorentina to pursue a permanent move for the Real Madrid defender. But the Serie A club could face stiff competition from Atletico Madrid in the race to sign Odriozola.

Atletico Madrid will need to delve into the market for a right-back in the summer transfer window after failing to replace Kieran Trippier in the January transfer window. The Newcastle United full-back has left a gaping hole in the Atletico Madrid defensive unit, especially with Sime Vrsaljko not occupying Diego Simeone’s fancy.

As a result, Aston Villa defender Matty Cash has emerged as a target for Atletico Madrid for the summer transfer window. But the Colchoneros are keeping their options open, with Eintracht Frankfurt man Danny da Costa and Real Madrid defender Alvaro Odriozola also popping up on their radar.

Odriozola is also a target for Athletic Club, and staying put in La Liga could be on the cards for him. As for a move to Atletico Madrid, the 26-year-old could follow in the footsteps of former Real Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente, now a pivotal figure at the Wanda Metropolitano.

It will be interesting to see if Real Madrid will be open to selling Odriozola to Atletico Madrid or opt to send him elsewhere. Los Blancos’ €20 million price tag might not hinder any of his suitors, and it looks like his time at the Santiago Bernabeu will end in the summer transfer window.
