La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly weighing up signing 21-year-old Spanish right-back Carlos Puga from Cordoba.

According to reputed Spanish journalist Toni Juanmarti, Carlos Puga is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The 21-year-old Cordoba right-back has emerged as a potential option to reinforce the reserve side ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Carlos Puga spent his formative years playing for various Spanish clubs before making his professional debut with CF Motril. But it is at Cordoba that the young defender has established a foothold at the first-team level, becoming a key figure for the Andalusian club in the ongoing campaign.

The 21-year-old right-back has turned out 31 times across all competitions for Cordoba, chipping in with two assists in the process. Puga’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with one of the most high profile clubs in Europe, Barcelona, setting sights on him ahead of the summer transfer window.

Barcelona will invest in a right-back in the summer transfer window as Sergino Dest continues to face an uncertain future at Camp Nou. At the same time, Dani Alves is in the twilight of his career and will only be a short-term solution for the Blaugrana despite rejoining them a few months ago.

The Catalan giant have been heavily linked with Noussair Mazraoui over a possible Bosman move in the summer transfer window. But recent reports have claimed that the Ajax right-back is closing in on joining Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich instead of Barcelona ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Barcelona might thus need to set sights on alternate options to bolster Xavi Hernandez’s right-back options unless Dest stays put at Camp Nou. And signing Puga could be a step in the right direction for the Catalan giants, even though the 21-year-old Cordoba defender will initially join Barcelona B if he moves from his current club.

According to Toni Juanmarti, Barcelona and Cordoba are yet to hold talks over Puga’s transfer. It will be interesting to see if the Spanish right-back becomes a key target for the Blaugrana. If he continues progressing at the desired rate, Puga could a earn promotion to the first team in the years to come, provided he joins Barcelona. Meanwhile, apart from Puga, Trilli is another young Spanish right-back on Barcelona’s radar.
