La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid are reportedly closely monitoring the progress of 25-year-old Spanish international Brais Mendez.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Brais Mendez is the subject of interest from Real Madrid over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Merengues are tracking the progress of the 25-year-old Celta Vigo midfielder and scouted him in the recent game between the two teams this past weekend.

Brais Mendez spent his formative years with Sardoma, Santa Marina and Villarreal before graduating from the Celta Vigo academy. After spending half a decade with the Galician club’s youth and reserve teams, the Spaniard made his first-team breakthrough in September 2017.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a solid 2021/22 campaign thus far, chipping in with five goals and five assists in 32 appearances across all competitions. Mendez has also been a regular in the Spanish national setup, even though opportunities have come few and far for him. But the player’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with Real Madrid setting sights on him.

The interest from Real Madrid stems from the rampant uncertainties surrounding the futures of Isco and Dani Ceballos. While Isco will likely depart from the Santiago Bernabeu as a free agent, Ceballos could leave Real Madrid to seek regular game-time at another club.

At the same time, Los Blancos must lay down a succession plan for Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. While the two ageing midfield stalwarts continue to show signs that they are still at the top of their games, age is catching up with the duo, prompting Real Madrid to scour the market for midfield reinforcements.

To that end, several central midfielders, including N’Golo Kante, have emerged on Real Madrid’s radar, with Brais Mendez also a viable target. Alternatively, Mendez could also operate from the right flank, acting as an outlet on the side, where Kylian Mbappe could be the first-choice winger if he joins Real Madrid on a Bosman move, as is widely expected.

Whichever way Mendez lines up for Real Madrid, he could become an asset for them. For now, though, the Merengues are closely monitoring the 25-year-old Spanish international’s progress and have scouted him in the recent match between Real Madrid and Celta Vigo. It will be interesting to see if the Spanish giants firm up their interest in Mendez.
