Luka Modric on the verge of agreeing Real Madrid renewal

Luka Modric is reportedly on the brink of reaching an agreement to sign a contract extension with Real Madrid, adding another year to his current deal.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Telemadrid, Luka Modric is closing in on reaching an agreement with Real Madrid over a contract extension. The 36-year-old will sign a new one-year deal that will run until the end of the 2022/23 season, much to the delight of Los Blancos.

Luka Modric has scripted a fairytale story of success since joining Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2012. While the Croat was already widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world ahead of his move to the Santiago Bernabeu a decade ago, his stock has risen considerably in the last ten years, meaning he will go down in history as an all-time great.

To date, the 36-year-old has turned out 424 times for Real Madrid, chipping in with 31 goals and 68 assists in the process. With his Real Madrid contract winding down in the summer, the Spanish giants have been sweating over Modric’s future at the club.

The Merengues have reportedly been keen on extending Modric’s stay at the Santiago Bernabeu for another year. But recent reports suggested that the veteran Croatian midfielder had not been as receptive to Real Madrid’s latest offer to extend his stay by a year as he had been in 2021.

While the player is approaching the final phase of his glittering career, he has shown little signs of age catching up with him. Most importantly, Modric has produced several game-changing displays for Real Madrid this season, inspiring the Spanish giants to a come-from-behind win over Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

The 36-year-old will also be a key figure for Real Madrid during Sunday’s much-anticipated El Clasico, especially with Barcelona’s improvement in form recently. As for matters off the pitch, Modric has finally responded positively to Real Madrid’s approach over a contract extension.

The Croatian international will commit another year of his career to Real Madrid, with his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu extending until the end of the 2022/23 season. If things go to plan, Modric will likely end his illustrious career at Real Madrid.
