La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly weighing up the prospect of signing 25-year-old Spanish international Sergio Reguilon in the summer.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Sergio Reguilon has popped up on the radar of Barcelona over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Catalan giants view the Spanish international as an alternative to their priority left-back target Jose Gaya.

Sergio Reguilon spent most of his formative years with Real Madrid before earning his first-team breakthrough in the 2018/19 season. But while Santiago Solari often utilised the 25-year-old ahead of Marcelo, the player’s fortunes worsened after Zinedine Zidane’s return to the helm at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2019.

After a successful loan stint with Sevilla, the Spanish international joined Tottenham Hotspur in September 2020. Since then, Reguilon has blown hot and cold at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and is yet to be completely convincing thus far, despite making 64 appearances to date for Spurs. His spell with the north Londoners could end in the summer, with Barcelona setting their sights on him.

Barcelona will enter the market for a left-back in the summer transfer window amid the falling performance levels of Jordi Alba. While the veteran Spanish defender has produced some game-changing performances under the tutelage of Xavi Hernandez, the inconsistency in his game could hamper his long-term future at the club.

With Alejandro Balde struggling to settle down in the first-team setup at Camp Nou, the Catalan giants are being forced to consider alternatives by scouring the market. To that end, Jose Gaya has emerged as Barcelona’s priority for the left-back slot heading into the summer transfer window.

But signing Gaya from Valencia could be a tall order for Barcelona, especially with Los Che keen on tying the Spanish international down to a new long-term contract. The La Liga heavyweights are thus keeping their options open, with Reguilon and Alejandro Grimaldo emerging as potential alternatives.

While Reguilon’s history with Real Madrid could complicate matters for Barcelona, an initial approach is likely. And with Tottenham interested in Memphis Depay and Clement Lenglet, a part-exchange deal could be on the cards.
