Sergino Dest is reportedly weighing up the prospect of leaving Barcelona to join Serie A giants AS Roma in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Sergino Dest is considering joining AS Roma in the summer transfer window. The USMNT international could be open to leaving Barcelona if they extend Dani Alves’s contract and sign Noussair Mazraoui from Ajax ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Sergino Dest joined Barcelona from Ajax in October 2020 and has since made only gradual progress in his career. While the 21-year-old has shown plenty of promise, he has also often left a lot to be desired, although he has produced some impressive performances lately.
To date, Dest has turned out 67 times for Barcelona, chipping in with three goals and four assists in the process. But the USMNT international faces an uncertain future at Camp Nou, with Dani Alves likely to remain at Barcelona for another season. At the same time, Noussair Mazraoui has become a key target for the Blaugrana heading into the summer transfer window.
If Alves signs a contract extension with Barcelona and Mazraoui arrives at Camp Nou, the Catalan giants could deem Dest surplus to requirements. And Serie A giants AS Roma are ready to hand the young defender an escape route out of Barcelona if things do not go his way in Catalonia.
The interest from AS Roma stems from the uncertainties surrounding the futures of Rick Karsdorp and Davide Santon. In addition, there are no guarantees that the Serie A giants will sign Ainsley Maitland-Niles permanently. At the same time, Alessandro Florenzi could join AC Milan for good in the summer transfer window.
AS Roma will thus have to delve into the market for a right-back in the summer transfer window, with Dest emerging as a viable target. And the Serie A giants have now been handed a major boost in pursuit of the Barcelona defender, who is open to joining the Giallorossi ahead of the 2022/23 season.
As iterated earlier, Dest’s move to AS Roma will largely hinge on what the future holds for Dani Alves and if Noussair Mazraoui joins the Blaugrana. But with Barcelona’s contract offer for the Ajax defender already prepared, Dest will likely be Serie A-bound in the summer transfer window.
