La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid are reportedly keen on signing Sadio Mane from Liverpool, either this summer or next year.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Sadio Mane is the subject of interest from Real Madrid over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Merengues have been primarily considering signing the Liverpool forward next summer but could accelerate their efforts if they fail to sign Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe.

Sadio Mane was already widely regarded as one of the most promising attacking prospects in the Premier League during his two-year stint with Southampton. But the Senegalese international has stepped his game up several notches since joining Liverpool in July 2016.

Now widely regarded as one of the finest attacking players in Europe, Mane has amassed 108 goals and 44 assists in 247 appearances for Liverpool. Along the way, the 29-year-old has also won the Premier League Golden Boot while being instrumental in Liverpool’s recent success.

This year, Mane has also tasted success at the international level, winning the Africa Cup of Nations. And the Liverpool forward’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with Real Madrid keen on signing him as part of their impending squad overhaul.

The Spanish giants are prioritising signing Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland in the summer transfer window. And Real Madrid will put off signing Mane till the summer of next year if Mbappe and Haaland arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu later this year.

But the Merengues are keeping their options open, which is sensible considering Haaland is also a target for arch-rivals Barcelona. As for Mbappe, Liverpool and Manchester City have shown an interest in the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner. At the same time, he is set to be offered a bumper new contract by Paris Saint-Germain.

So Real Madrid must keep their options open heading into the summer transfer window, which is why they are now weighing up the prospect of snapping up Mane in this year’s summer transfer window instead of 2023. But Real Madrid’s chances of landing the Senegalese international appear low as Liverpool will unlikely sanction his sale this year despite signing Luis Diaz.

For his part, the Liverpool forward is reportedly open to joining Real Madrid, although a move might only materialise if he runs down his Liverpool contract. For now, it looks like Mane will not be joining Real Madrid in the summer, although things can change quickly in a transfer window.
