For at least a few years, Chelsea have reportedly mulled over replacing Robert Sanchez as their undisputed No. 1. Some of the speculation stems from the Spaniard’s inconsistent performances for the Blues, with many of his errors over the last couple of seasons proving costly for the team.
Last summer, they were heavily interested in signing Mike Maignan before the Club World Cup. Following a stellar performance from Sanchez in the tournament, which Chelsea eventually won, the thinking behind the scenes changed regarding their goalkeeping position.
While the Frenchman never joined the club and instead committed his future to AC Milan, Chelsea continued to place their trust in Sanchez. Once again, the West London club entered the summer window amid speculation about their No. 1 goalkeeper, although a specific name mentioned over the last few weeks has now been dismissed.

Fabrizio Romano’s post on X included comments from Xabi Alonso on the goalkeeping situation amid links to FC Porto’s Diogo Costa. However, the Spanish manager has confirmed his faith in his current options, with Sanchez seemingly the man set to start between the sticks when the season kicks off.
Alonso said,“I am very happy with the goalkeepers I have. Mike Penders did great at Strasbourg, and Sanchez has good experience after many years in the Premier League.”
Costa has been linked with Chelsea recently, according to reports, and he is one of the goalkeepers who have attracted interest from several major clubs over the last few years. However, he has continued at FC Porto, although this summer could change his fortunes.
Recently, the links with Chelsea were dismissed, according to reports, and it appears the Blues are likely to continue with Sanchez as their No. 1 moving forward. Unless there is a late twist in the window or a significant market opportunity arises, the Blues are not expected to pursue another goalkeeper, as Sanchez will have Mike Penders as his deputy.
As for the 26-year-old Portugal international, he will probably have one or two opportunities come his way as the window progresses. He could join another Premier League side if a respectable offer arrives, although it may not come from Chelsea.
