Tottenham Hotspur have been urged to make a move for the Brentford striker Ivan Toney during the January transfer window.

According to Paul Merson, Tottenham should look to make a move for Iva Toney if they are in the top four midway through the campaign. Apparently, the 27-year-old striker is valued at £60 million and he has been linked with a number of clubs in recent weeks, including Arsenal and Chelsea.

Merson said on Sky Sports News (1:26pm, September 23, 2023), “If Tottenham are in the top four, they have got to have a go. They have got to have a go. But it all depends on where they are in the table.”

Ivan Toney is currently suspended for breaching the FA betting regulations, and he will return to action midway through January. He has proven himself in the Premier League and could prove to be a quality acquisition for Tottenham.

The North London outfit sanctioned the departure of Harry Kane earlier this summer, and they are yet to bring in a quality replacement. They chose not to sign a direct replacement for the England international during the summer transfer window and were expecting Richarlison to step up and fill the void.

Things are not going according to plan so far, and the Brazilian international has struggled to score goals consistently. Signing a quality striker in January could prove to be a wise decision for Tottenham.

Toney has proven himself in the Premier League and could make an immediate impact at the North London club. He managed to score 21 goals across all competitions last season and is well-settled in English football.

The English striker recently switched agents in order to secure a move away from Brentford, and the opportunity to join a top-six club like Tottenham could be an exciting proposition for him. They have started the season well and they are currently second in the league table. And Spurs will be hoping to do well this season and finish in the Champions League positions.

If they are in the top two come January, they should look to bring him a couple of additions and push for the league title. It will be interesting to see if they can fend off the competition from other clubs like Chelsea and sign the Brentford Striker midway through the season. Chelsea are looking to improve their attacking options as well and have identified the 27-year-old has a target.
