Liverpool and Chelsea played a 1-1 stalemate at Anfield on Tuesday as Simon Mignolet save a late penalty to rescue a point for the Reds.
Liverpool started the match on the front foot and had the best early chance of the match, but it was Chelsea who broke the deadlock after David Luiz unleashed a spectacular, inch-perfect long range free-kick to put the Blues ahead, as an off-guard Simon Mignolet was left stranded.
Roberto Firmino inexplicably missed an great chance to level things up a few minutes into the second half, but Georginio Wijnaldum did the needful as he headed in the equaliser from James Milner’s deflected cross in the 57th minute.
Chelsea had a glorious opportunity to put the game to bed late into the match, as Diego Costa won a controversial penalty when he was tripped by Joel Matip in the Liverpool box.
However, Simon Mignolet stood up and turned from zero to hero as he thwarted Costa’s kick from the spot to rescue an unlikely point for the Reds.

So Liverpool, in crisis, sit a point off 2nd. Could have won that, a cheap free-kick decision and then stupid goalkeeping cost us.

Simon Mignolet was the major talking point as he was caught napping when David Luiz put the visitors ahead, but he went on to save face late into the match as he denied Diego Costa from the spot
6 – Simon Mignolet has saved 6 of the 14 PL penalties he’s faced at Liverpool, more than any keeper at the club. Stopper.

Good save by Mignolet who benefitted from looking at the shot as it was taken. That could catch on.
— Tony Barrett (@TonyBarrett) January 31, 2017
You might think that was a good save from Mignolet, but he was actually only then diving to save the David Luiz free kick.

I think Mignolet is still setting his wall up for that free kick.

Mignolet wasn’t even ready for that free kick, Liverpool luck…

Gini & Hendo were great today. Firmino not sharp as he should be. Lovren needs to be better. Mignolet an enigma on set pieces, off the spot
