Shaun Wright-Phillips has tipped Chelsea to get the better of Manchester City in the Premier League title race.
It’s been a few seasons since Chelsea have truly been in the hunt for the Premier League title. The Blues last won the domestic honour back in 2017 under the guidance of Antonio Conte. However, since their Champions League triumph and a successful transfer window, they are a favourite again.
Under previous manager Frank Lampard, Chelsea were good enough to finish fourth in the league. In contrast, the subsequent arrival of Thomas Tuchel has revitalised the squad to challenge for all honours this season. The German tactician guided the club to the Champions League crown with a final victory over Manchester City last term.
If there was any doubt, Tuchel has helped Chelsea start the season unbeaten as they sit joint-top of the table alongside Liverpool. Their performances so far have been convincing enough on all fronts. The Blues have been prolific in the final third while conceding a solitary goal from the penalty spot.
Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United are all considered Chelsea’s rivals for the Premier League. Pep Guardiola’s side, in particular, are considered hot favourites for the domestic honour after winning it last season. However, many believe it’s the west Londoners who look like the real deal this term.
Former Manchester City and Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has tipped the London side to take the title away from Manchester. He also gave his reasoning for this prediction. As quoted by The Sun, Wright-Phillips said, “Right this second, I think Chelsea would pip City to the title.
“The fact that they don’t have to play well and still come away with 3-0 wins is unbelievable, and Tuchel has even said they haven’t played well yet. He still wants more from his team and wants them to play his way still, but they’re coming away with these wins still. When Frank Lampard was in charge, the attack looked really fluent, but they were conceding too many goals.
“Tuchel came in and assured that defence up; at first, it looked like the defence and midfield were two separate teams. As soon as it started coming together, you can see it runs like a well-oiled machine.”
With all major teams strengthening their squad, this season promises a close title race, and there are already four major teams tipped to challenge it. However, with their formidable squad, Chelsea might run away with the lead on top if they continue their consistent displays.
