Scott Minto on Talk Sport insists Chelsea should have signed 26-year-old Tottenham star James Maddison during the summer.

James Maddison has proved himself in the Premier League, making over 160 appearances for Leicester City and scoring plenty of goals for an attacking midfielder. As the summer window approached and after suffering relegation with the Foxes, a big move to one of the top clubs beckoned for the 26-year-old star.

Amid heavy interest from Newcastle United, Maddison preferred to join Tottenham, and Spurs paid a fee close to £45 million to Leicester. The 26-year-old has become an instant hit at North London after helping the team to an unbeaten start, scoring once and assisting twice in four games.

With the transfer window shut until January, many have taken the international break to discuss some transfer speculation that may have happened during the summer. One of them involves Chelsea’s apparent interest in Maddison but their decision not to sign him.

A report revealed Mauricio Pochettino was keen on the 26-year-old Tottenham star, but the club’s recently adopted policy of signing players under the age of 25 prevented the move. Such is the speculation surrounding the England international, who seems quite happy at Spurs.

On Talk Sport, Scott Minto rued Chelsea’s decision not to sign the 26-year-old Tottenham star. He said, “If it is a question of going up to 25 years of age and no more and Chelsea have lost out on the likes of James Maddison because of that, then I think that’s completely wrong because you should be guided by rather than rules.” “Maddison has already shown what a player he could be for Spurs.”

Chelsea did bring in a new player similar to Maddison’s profile in Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchman had agreed to join Chelsea last summer but only came in now. He has not had the best of starts in a Blue shirt after suffering a serious knee injury in pre-season that will keep him out for a few months.

As for Maddison, he could have been a solid signing for the Blues, and his experience would have helped them in a big way. Tottenham have found a bargain signing owing to their swiftness in agreeing a deal with Leicester City for the 26-year-old star.
