Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has criticised Manchester United’s decision to sell Scott McTominay to Serie A club Napoli last summer.
In an interview with BBC, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer discussed several topics, including one of his former go-to players, Scott McTominay. The Manchester United legend expressed his dismay at seeing the Red Devils cashing in on the Scottish international last summer, with their former homegrown player thriving at Serie A club Napoli.
Solskjaer said, “Scott [McTominay] and Fred together, they were lads you would put your hat on every day to give 100%. How you can sell Scott is beyond me.”
Scott McTominay has stamped his authority since joining Napoli from Manchester United in a deal worth £25.7 million last summer. The Scottish midfielder was among the top scorers for the Red Devils last season, having been a rare bright spot in a dreadful 2023/24 campaign for the fallen Premier League giants.
With goals drying up for Manchester United in the 2024/25 season, the decision to sell McTominay to Napoli last summer has been seemingly ill-advised. Meanwhile, the 28-year-old homegrown player has been exceptional for Napoli, playing his part in guiding the Partenopei to the top of the Serie A table.
The Scot has contributed to 16 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions thus far, finding the back of the net 12 times and providing four assists. Meanwhile, McTominay’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, and several pundits have criticised Manchester United’s decision to part ways with him last summer.
Joe Jordan recently insisted Manchester United “made a mistake” selling McTominay to Napoli last summer, citing his athleticism and technical ability as the reasons. Those suggestions are valid, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also correct in his assessment when he commented on Scott McTominay.
With Manchester United struggling to find the back of the net in over a dozen Premier League games this season, it is clear they have missed McTominay’s tenacity and ability to create a goal out of nothing.
Meanwhile, the 28-year-old Scottish international is closing in on winning the Serie A title, with Napoli three points ahead of Inter Milan with three games left in the 2024/25 season. As for Manchester United, the only way they can salvage the campaign is by winning the UEFA Europa League title later this month.
