Belgian teenage goalkeeping sensation Lucca Brughmans is willing to do everything in his power to become Liverpool’s first-choice shot-stopper.
Liverpool signed 18-year-old Belgian shot-stopper Lucca Brughmans from KRC Genk on deadline day, immediately sending him back on loan for the remainder of the season.
Meanwhile, the teenager has already revealed his long-term ambition is to become the club’s first-choice keeper, as relayed by Sport Witness.
The Reds initially planned for Brughmans to develop as a potential deputy to Alisson Becker, but when Giorgi Mamardashvili’s potential departure did not materialise, the pathway shifted.
Brughmans wants to be Liverpool’s first-choice
The teenager’s return to Genk has begun impressively. The Belgium Under-19 international was named man of the match after helping his side secure a goalless draw against Anderlecht. Despite his move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs, the teenager is refusing to get carried away. He has also kept details of Liverpool’s plans for him private, though his ultimate objective is plain.
“I am not going to lay Liverpool’s plan on the table in its entirety, although the intention is to become their first-choice goalkeeper in the long term,” Brughmans said before adding, “I will do everything I can to achieve that, step by step. That is why I am back in Genk now and want to achieve the highest possible with the team here,” he added.
Brughmans believes his current loan spell will be crucial to achieving that ambition. Liverpool’s coaching staff are expected to remain in regular contact with Genk, while club officials will also attend his matches to monitor his development.
“The coaches are in contact with each other regarding my physical condition, for example. Liverpool also comes to watch my matches. It is good that I can learn from both sides,” the young goalkeeper explained.
The teenager has been part of Genk’s first-team setup since the summer of 2024, making 16 senior appearances. Brughmans has conceded just 15 goals in those matches and kept seven clean sheets. His physical presence and composure earned him first-team minutes and Liverpool’s interest.
Goalkeepers with his profile are not easy to find. Not only is he big and agile, but he also has a tall frame and great composure under pressure. Liverpool paid €35 million to sign the Belgian youth international, but Brughmans is not bothered about the price tag.
“I leave those figures to the professionals. I have good people around me who keep my feet on the ground,” he said.
For now, the youngster’s immediate focus is Genk. However, his sights are set on eventually taking the gloves at Anfield, but development at the Belgian club remains the priority.
