Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has been linked with a move away from the West London club ahead of the summer.

Conor Gallagher was expected to leave Chelsea during the January transfer window as well. However, the 23-year-old ended up staying despite interest from clubs like Tottenham Hotspur.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness has now claimed that Chelsea could be forced to sell the England international at the end of the season in order to balance their books. Chelsea will have to comply with the financial fair play regulations after spending freely since the takeover.

Wyness told Football Insider, “Chelsea are going to have to offload players early in the window – before the books are balanced on 30 June. Their business is going to be the big one to set the ripple effect going – if they don’t achieve their targets.”

“They can then go out and spend again later in the window. That just shows to me that these rules and limits are being applied in the wrong way. There has to be an element of common sense that comes into this. Chelsea will target certain players, like Gallagher, to get maximum value as he came through the academy at the club.”

Chelsea have spent substantial amounts of money on several new signings, and they will now have make amends. Conor Gallagher is certainly a player in demand, and he could fetch an attractive amount of money in the summer.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up. The 23-year-old has been a key player for Chelsea this season, and he has captained them several times. He could prove to be a quality addition for most Premier League clubs.

Tottenham, in particular, are keen on him. The North London outfit need to add more quality and depth in the middle of the park. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been linked with an exit and Gallagher could be the ideal replacement for the Denmark international. His hard-working style of play, pressing ability makes him a good fit for Ange Postecoglou’s high intensity attacking football.

The 23-year-old is likely to improve with coaching and experience, and he could develop into a top class Premier League midfielder for Tottenham in the coming seasons. It will be interesting to see if the Blues can agree on a deal with their rivals for the England international.

Gallagher will want to join a club capable of competing for major trophies, and Tottenham are currently well placed to secure Champions League qualification. They could be an attractive destination for him if Chelsea decide to force him out of the club because of financial issues.
