Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has slammed Ruben Amorim after Manchester United suffer a 1-0 defeat to Everton at Old Trafford on Monday.
Manchester United’s five-match unbeaten run in the Premier League came to an end as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Everton on Monday night. While they dominated the proceedings, the Red Devils failed to find the back of the net against a team that was down to ten men for the majority of the game. And Jamie Carragher has slammed Ruben Amorim for his tactics in the loss.
Jamie Carragher on Ruben Amorim’s tactics during Everton defeat
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher wasn’t pleased with what he saw from Amorim’s team, and he insisted that the Portuguese manager deserves a lot of the blame for their defeat against the Merseyside club.
While speaking about it on Sky Sports, Carragher said, “This is a bad night for the manager. There was an awful long time left after Everton’s goal. Everyone’s eyes are looking at the manager. You could hear Gary [Neville] a lot on commentary wondering what changes he’s going to make.
“Ruben Amorim feels like the first manager who sticks with the system rather than an idea of how to play. The formation’s his baby. And to not change it or alter it in situations like that, I don’t understand.
“You don’t need three players at the back. If you’re going to stick with the system maybe put midfield players there [where Luke Shaw and Leny Yoro were] because you’re going to have so much more of the ball.
“It’s not the losing the three points tonight. It’s one where a lot of people will really question the manager on the back of that defeat. The players can do better but the manager will take a lot of the blame for tonight.”
Not only did this defeat to Everton bring an end to their five-match unbeaten run, but United have now dropped points in each of their last three league games after a run of three straight wins.
Everton were down to 10-men in the 13th minute of the game after Idrissa Gueye had been sent off for slapping teammate Michael Keane. While the Red Devils had the majority of the ball, they ended up conceding the only goal of the game in the 29th minute.
Amorim’s team had 70% of the ball, and they took 23 shots at goal, but only six of those were on target. Despite having things under their control, United couldn’t really break down the Toffees’ backline.
Amorim is to be blamed for the defeat
Carragher feels Amorim has to take a lot of responsibility for this defeat. The Portuguese manager decided to stick to his formation and style of play despite knowing the fact that they would have the majority of the ball.
They had enough time to come back in the game, but couldn’t make it count as Amorim refused to go all-out attack and stuck to three at the back.
While Manchester United’s recent results have been respectable, this defeat to Everton will raise serious questions about the manager, as his stubbornness may well have cost them crucial points.
