Manchester United have been linked with a move for former Chelsea striker Timo Werner, but Glen Johnson has urged them to stay away.

Former Chelsea and Liverpool defender Glenn Johnson has urged Manchester United to stay away from Timo Werner. The quotes have been presented by TEAMtalk. The former Liverpool defender has pointed to Werner’s struggles at Chelsea, suggesting it is evident that he struggled to adapt to Premier League football.

The former Liverpool defender said (h/t TEAMtalk), “I would be surprised. It really didn’t go well for him at Chelsea. It wasn’t the fact that he was unlucky, or there was a player taking his position that was on fire; he had all the opportunity to go on and be whatever he could be, and it didn’t happen in the Premier League. So I would be very surprised if Manchester United went for him, and if they did go for him, I would be very surprised if they saw a different Timo Werner.”

Although the 27-year-old has done quite well since his return to the Bundesliga, there are no guarantees that he will succeed in the Premier League. He was quite underwhelming during his time at Stamford Bridge despite winning the UEFA Champions League title with them.

Manchester United need to bring in a quality striker in the coming months, but they should aim higher. Nonetheless, recent reports have claimed that the Red Devils have submitted an enquiry for Timo Werner.

Werner is already 27, and he is unlikely to get better with coaching and experience. Also, his signing would be a gamble, and Manchester United cannot afford to take one right now. They signed Rasmus Hojlund during the summer transfer window. But the  Denmark international will need more time to showcase his qualities consistently. He is still young and adapting to the Premier League.

Manchester United must look to bring in another striker who can support him in the attack, and it will be interesting to see if they can get a deal done in January. They need to sign someone who can make an immediate impact at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have had a mediocre season by their standards, and they need the right additions in order to turn things around. While there is no doubt that Timo Werner has been a key player for RB Leipzig, he simply failed to adapt to the intensity of the Premier League last time around, and Manchester United must steer clear of him in the coming months.
