Glen Johnson believes Liverpool will still challenge for titles this season despite their limited spending in the transfer market.
There were plenty of talks around Liverpool’s limited transfer activity this summer. It became increasingly clear that Jurgen Klopp would not go out spending the club’s money just because their rivals were bringing in top quality. The Reds have only signed players that they deem perfect for their squad, a rule they followed up on this summer.
Pundits criticised their approach in the build-up to the transfer deadline. While some have dismissed their chances of winning titles this season, others have been neutral in their predictions based on transfer activity. Rivals such as Chelsea and the Manchester clubs have strengthened significantly, but Liverpool are still considered challengers on all fronts.
Ibrahima Konate remains the only arrival at Liverpool as Klopp wanted to bring defensive cover for his side following last season’s collapse at the back. However, Liverpool were linked with a few players as the transfer deadline approached, although they never really got in the act of making signings to Anfield.
On paper, without last season’s injuries, Liverpool have a strong enough squad to challenge Manchester City or Chelsea. However, pundits such as Jamie Carragher believes they should have signed an attacker to improve their chances this season.
Former Liverpool full-back Glen Johnson, though, believes the club can still challenge for titles, despite their less than impressive transfer activity. Speaking to Betting Odds, Johnson made some interesting points about the club’s transfer activity while still believing in their ability to win silverware this season.
Johnson said, “Yes, I can still see them winning silverware. It’s obvious that they’ve been quiet in the market, but to be honest, they’ve always been quiet. They’re not always the big spenders, and we all know how they do their transfers, working with statistics and other forms of data. They’ll only buy players that suit all their criteria. I do wish that they had done more in the transfer market, but it doesn’t surprise me that they didn’t.”

Liverpool have started their season brightly, winning their opening two games while salvaging a draw to Chelsea during the last matchday. Considering their squad depth, Liverpool could be viewed as a challenger from all angles, barring a collapse like last season due to the many injuries they suffered.
