Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca is one of the names that have been linked with the Manchester City job in recent weeks. The Italian manager, who was one of Guardiola’s assistants during City’s treble-winning 2022/23 season, can certainly be an ideal replacement. However, he is not affected by all the speculation.
Maresca on being linked with the City Job
Maresca recently commented on reports linking him with a move to City. He said via Sky Sports:
“It doesn’t affect me at all because I know it’s 100 per cent speculation.
“In this moment, there is no time for these kinds of things, first of all because I have a contract here until 2029.
“I said many times, my focus is just about this club and I’m very proud to be here.
“It’s speculation. One week ago, in Italy, it was the same with Juventus.
“I don’t pay attention because I know it’s not true.
“Now it’s important to understand the reason why this news was there. But it’s not my job – I don’t care at all.”
After leaving City, he took on his first managerial gig at Leicester City during the summer of 2023. He did wonders for the Foxes in his first season in charge, helping them gain promotion to the English top flight.
On the back of his impressive work, Chelsea appointed him as their new boss ahead of the 2024/25 season. In his first season at the London club, he helped them win the Conference League and the Club World Cup. The Blues even secured a top-four finish.
Chelsea are pleased with the work Maresca has done, and with his contract running until 2029, they are not concerned about his future. The Italian manager also appears fully committed to the project, suggesting that the links with Manchester City are mere speculation with no truth to them.
Enzo Maresca on staying at Chelsea next season
He was even asked about being at the club next season, to which he replied: “Absolutely yes. Again, I have a contract until 2029 and this is speculation.
“I don’t have anything to add because I don’t pay attention, and if we continue to talk about that, that means I’m paying attention to that.
“I’m just focused on the Newcastle game and my job.”
The Italian manager is paying no attention to the speculation surrounding his future. He is fully focused on helping his team reach greater heights and, for now, has his sights set on their clash against Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
