Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund has confirmed the club will allow Joao Palhinha to leave this summer, with Aston Villa monitoring the defensive midfielder’s situation.
Joao Palhinha arrived at Bayern Munich with high expectations after completing a big-money move from Fulham last year. However, the Portugal international has struggled to establish himself under Vincent Kompany, making it increasingly clear that his long-term future may lie away from Munich.

“They’re training with us, but they won’t play an important role here. I know they’re aware of that,” Freund said to Abendzeitung. He added, “They’re both good players. They’ll continue to train and play here for now, but the plan is for them to take the next step somewhere else.”
Aston Villa hoping to sign Palhinha
Those comments are likely to alert Aston Villa, who have been linked with the former Sporting CP star in recent weeks. The West Midlands outfit are believed to be exploring midfield reinforcements as they prepare for another demanding campaign under Unai Emery, with Palhinha viewed as a player capable of adding experience, physicality and defensive stability.
According to reports, Aston Villa have been assessing deal conditions, and Bayern Munich prefer a permanent transfer to another loan. Other clubs have shown interest, but Bayern are determined to reduce their wage bill and trim the squad through outright sales. For Villa, Palhinha represents an attractive option thanks to his proven Premier League pedigree.
During his spell at Fulham, he established himself as one of England’s most effective ball-winning midfielders, earning widespread praise for his tackling, positioning and leadership. His defensive profile suits Emery’s system, and Villa are expected to make a formal offer. The player will cost €25 million, which is a reasonable price for a player of his quality and experience.
