Shaun Wright-Phillips has urged Callum Hudson-Odoi to leave Chelsea to fulfil his potential as the winger struggles for playing time.

Callum Hudson-Odoi was considered a huge talent even before he made his Chelsea debut. At that time, there were fears the club might lose him after a brief contract standoff. The promising winger eventually signed a long-term deal, despite plenty of interest from top-level clubs.

Bayern Munich were the torchbearers to sign him and apparently remain interested in him to this day. Under Frank Lampard, it looked like the winger was forging a regular starting place, but since the former Chelsea manager’s sacking, things have gone downhill for Hudson-Odoi.

There have been some decent moments under Thomas Tuchel, but the German manager has been vocal in his criticism of the winger. At the end of last season, there was friction between the pair after the winger came on as a substitute at half-time against Southampton, only for Tuchel to replace him with Hakim Ziyech.

Since then, Hudson-Odoi has found game-time hard to come by under Tuchel, who also admitted to blocking a late move to Borussia Dortmund. Since the new season began, the winger has played just twice, completing 82 minutes on both occasions.

From how things are transpiring under Tuchel, it does seem like Hudson-Odoi will get limited playing time this season, and former Chelsea star Shaun Wright-Phillips has urged the 20-year-old to change his situation at the club.

Wright-Phillips suggests leaving Chelsea would be beneficial for Hudson-Odoi to realise his full potential, which would only be possible by playing regular football.

“I think whether he decides to realise his full potential or stick to being a fringe player is totally down to him. If he wants to be in and out of the team and play a role that he is doing now, then you stay at Chelsea. But, if you want to play regular football and show everyone why Bayern Munich were thinking about buying him, then he’s going to have to walk away and prove to people how good he is.”

Things are certainly not getting any easy for Hudson-Odoi, especially since the number of spots in the attacking unit reduced following the change in system earlier this year. Having said that, it remains to be seen if Hudson-Odoi stays put at Chelsea and fights for his place or if he moves away, just as Wright-Phillips suggests.
