Liverpool eyeing Carlalberto Ludi as Richard Hughes replacement

Carlalberto Ludi is one of the prominent names on Liverpool’s shortlist to replace outgoing sporting director Richard Hughes.

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool’s hierarchy are drawing up a comprehensive list of candidates to succeed Hughes. Among the options is Ludi, the 43-year-old transfer expert who currently works for Como. He is viewed as a viable candidate to take over from Hughes in the near future.

Hughes became an influential figure at Liverpool in a short period, overseeing two major transfer windows involving significant spending. He joined the club from Bournemouth in 2024, and his overall tenure can be described as mixed.

During his first summer, Liverpool spent relatively little on new signings but still won the Premier League title in Arne Slot’s first season. The following summer was more significant for Hughes, as he oversaw major deals for players such as Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, and Alexander Isak. Those transfers contributed to a record-breaking summer of spending for the club.

This summer, reports suggested that Hughes was preparing to move to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. There were also claims that he managed the transfer operations of both clubs simultaneously. Hughes played an important role in several high-profile deals, including the signing of Bradley Barcola, as well as the appointment of manager Andoni Iraola.

Carlalberto Ludi on Liverpool’s radar

Liverpool are considering several candidates from both inside and outside the club, including individuals from within Premier League circles. One overseas option is Christoph Freund, although the Bayern Munich sporting director recently signed a new contract and may not be available.

Ludi is another overseas figure who has attracted the attention of Liverpool’s decision-makers. The 43-year-old transfer expert has played a major role in Como’s rapid rise since joining the club in 2019, when they were competing in Serie D. Since then, Ludi has helped guide Como through the divisions and into Serie A before overseeing their progression to Champions League football.

His influence extends beyond recruitment. Ludi has also been closely involved in developing Como’s football structure, shaping their player strategy and establishing long-term plans. His experience across different levels of the game makes him an appealing candidate for Liverpool. However, it remains to be seen whether the Premier League club will approach Como about securing his services.
