Xabi Alonso set to join Chelsea as agreement reached

Former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso is all set to become the new Chelsea manager ahead of next season.

According to a report from The Athletic, Xabi Alonso has a complete agreement in place to become the new Chelsea manager. He has given the green light to the move and is set to pen a four-year deal with the club following a London visit early last week.

Alonso has been without a job since being sacked by Real Madrid at the start of the year. The Liverpool icon made a name for himself as a manager with his impressive work at Bayer Leverkusen. He guided the German club to their first Bundesliga title in 2023/24, while being unbeaten.

On the back of his heroics, his former club Real Madrid handed him a three-year deal last summer. However, he was sacked seven months into his tenure. While he made an impressive start with 10 wins in the first 11 league games, the Spanish manager eventually lost the dressing room.

He has been on the lookout for a new job since the start of the year, and Chelsea have had him as a priority target to replace Liam Rosenior, who was sacked towards the end of April. Rosenior, who was brought in to take Enzo Maresca’s place, could only survive four months at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso to return to the Premier League

Calum McFarlane was handed the reins on an interim basis, while the Blues continue to look for a permanent manager. While Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola was on their wishlist, Alonso has been their priority target since the start.

After weeks of negotiations, they finally have the green light from the Spanish manager. He is set to sign a three-year deal, and an official announcement is just around the corner. Alonso will be making a return to the Premier League after having spent five years at Liverpool as a player, a period during which he won the Champions League with them.

The Chelsea board considers Alonso an ideal fit because of his proven track record, Premier League experience, and his ability to bring the best out of young players. He has a high-intensity and attacking brand of football, which is a must for the Blues, who want to return to the top of English football.
