Chelsea make approach for Thiago Motta

Chelsea recently conducted a “survey” for 41-year-old Bologna manager Thiago Motta, who has become a hot property in the managerial market.

According to Italian journalist Eleonora Trotta, Thiago Motta is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are scouring the market for a manager heading into the summer amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Mauricio Pochettino. And the West London club recently touched base to ask about the 41-year-old Bologna manager.

Thiago Motta has established himself as one of the best young managers in the world in the last 12 months. An excellent midfielder during his playing days, he represented high-profile clubs like Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain before hanging up his boots in 2018.

The Brazil-born former midfielder also turned out for the Selecao and the Italian national side on the international stage. Meanwhile, the 41-year-old entered the coaching sphere in 2018 by taking charge of the PSG under-19 side. Motta’s first senior job came with Genoa, although he only had a short stint at the Italian club.

Another short spell followed with Spezia before he joined Bologna in September 2022. Since then, the two parties have come leaps and bounds, with Motta spearheading the club’s bid to finish in the Serie A top five and qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Such an impact has alerted several high-profile clubs, including Chelsea.

Chelsea’s interest in Thiago Motta is understandable. The Blues are scouring the market for a long-term replacement for Mauricio Pochettino. While there have been some positive signs from the West London club, Pochettino will not guide them back to the UEFA Champions League. So, there is a raging debate about the Argentine tactician’s long-term Chelsea future.

In the meantime, several managers have emerged on Chelsea’s radar, with Motta the latest target for the club. And the Blues have made preliminary contact to “survey” about the 41-year-old highly-rated manager.

Motta’s playing style and refreshing ideas can potentially galvanise the Chelsea squad. With the West London club having a young core, the former Italian international can be the ideal appointment for them. It will be interesting to see if a move for the 41-year-old tactician sees the light of day.
