In yet another blow in Liverpool’s managerial hunt, Germany boss Julian Nagelsman is unlikely to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
According to The Telegraph, Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann is unlikely to take over at Anfield despite the fact that his current deal as coach of the German national team ends after Euro 2024, meaning Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi are leading candidates for the Liverpool job.
Klopp announced that this would be his final campaign in the hot seat at Anfield back in January, leaving the Reds with plenty of time to find his successor. The former Borussia Dortmund manager has brought bundles of success to the club since his arrival, so finding a replacement who can hit similar heights would certainly be a tricky task.
The Reds’ search for a Klopp successor has taken several twists and turns over the past two months.
Despite appearing to be the clear favourite, Xabi Alonso will not become the next Liverpool manager after the Spaniard publicly expressed his desire to continue his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen beyond the current campaign.
The Spaniard has done a remarkable job as Bayer Leverkusen boss, guiding them to what will surely be the first Bundesliga title in their history.
This has led to speculation that he would return to the club where he won his first Champions League trophy to take over from the legendary German. However, his latest decision has forced Liverpool to look at other avenues.
Julian Nagelsmann unlikely to become Liverpool boss
Julian Nagelsmann has also emerged as a potential candidate for the vacancy at Anfield. It’s being widely reported that the current Germany boss scores very high on FSG CEO Michael Edwards’ data analysis checks alongside Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi.
Following a successful tenure at Bayern Munich, the 36-year-old took over the German squad, following in the footsteps of his compatriot Hansi Flick. However, with his contract due to expire after the European Championships this summer, Nagelsmann is prepared to return as club manager, sparking interest from Manchester United and Liverpool.
While it seemed quite possible that Nagelsmann would make the Anfield move given his short length of contract with Germany, the above update has shot down the possibility, claiming he is still seen as more of an outside candidate for the post due to his involvement at Euros.
The new runaway favourite for the role is Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim. The 39-year-old has been in charge of the Lisbon outfit since 2020 and is aiming to win a second Primeira Liga title this season.
There is a release clause in his contract with Sporting that would allow Liverpool to acquire him by paying around £12.8 million. Plan B behind Amorim now seems to be Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, who has a similar release clause embedded into his current deal at the Amex Stadium.
