Liverpool are willing to do it all to have 42-year-old Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso on their bench starting next season.
According to Fabrizio Romano via CaughtOffside, Liverpool are keen on bringing Xabi Alonso back to the club. They want their former midfielder to take over from Jurgen Klopp who will be leaving at the end of the season.
It has been a while since Klopp announced his decision to end his stint at Liverpool. While it did come as a surprise to many, the German manager has given the English club enough time to look for a successor.
Liverpool look at Alonso as a potential replacement
The Reds have a list of potential targets and Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso is quite high on their list. The 42-year-old has done wonders at the German club. He has made quite a name for himself quite early in his managerial.
Alonso has transformed Leverkusen into a winning machine. They have been unbeaten all season long and are all set to end Bayer Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga. The former Spanish midfielder has the opportunity to help his club win multiple titles and he seems to be focused on the job at hand.
He has been on the radar of clubs for a long while. A few of them even established contacts and enquired about him towards the end of last year. However, with Leverkusen closing in on the league title, Alonso has no time to think about a potential summer move.
Appointing Alonso won’t be straightforward
According to transfer expert Romano, it won’t be easy for any club to hold direct talks with the 42-year-old or the German club until the end of the season. And, since there is no release clause in his deal for next season, the interested club will have to go in and negotiate.
Despite the difficulties involved in bringing him to Anfield, Liverpool seem to be obsessed with appointing him as their new boss. They will keep pushing for his signatures and will present him with their project.
But, it is still too early for him to decide his future and it will depend on when they win the league and how they end their Europa League campaign. Liverpool are not the only ones obsessed, they will face competition from Bayern Munich. As a result, it won’t be straightforward by any means.
